From Boston, go south on the Southeast Expressway, then West (a few miles) on Route 128, then South on Route 24, and South on Interstate 495 following signs to Cape Cod. From New York City and Providence (T. F. Greene) Airport, go North on Interstate 95, then East on Interstate 195, which joins Route 25. From either Boston or Providence,
cross the Cape Cod Canal at the Bourne Bridge, follow signs to Route
28, Woods Hole and Martha's Vineyard. By air -- with some experience-based fly-in advice Providence, Rhode Island -- Most preferred! T. F. Greene Airport in Providence has fewer flights than Boston, but the airport is smaller and significantly easier to get in and out of. All the car rental agencies are there. The drive to Woods Hole is much faster during heavy traffic hours. There are BUSSES directly from T.F. Greene Airport to Woods Hole -- the bus stop is within a couple hundred yards of the Airplane House. Boston -- What the airlines giveth the traffic jam taketh away.Boston's Logan Airport has more flights than Providence,
but you have to brave Logan Airport, the Sumner/Callahan Tunnel, the
Big Dig and the Southeast Expressway. Warning: you'll find out why Boston
traffic is legendary. Fly to Boston only if the air travel is much cheaper
or much more convenient. Try to arrive (a) in the wee hours, or (b)
between 9:00AM and 1:00PM, else the convenience of air travel will rapidly
evaporate in the Friday afternoon traffic jam. Hyannis -- Not especially recommended.Usually flying in to Hyannis isn't worth the cost or delay entailed by the extra connection. Plus Hyannis may *look* close to Woods Hole on the map, but it is about an hour of stop-and-go driving to get to Woods Hole. Martha's Vineyard -- Most relaxed. This is the exotic way to arrive. Fly to the Vineyard, take a taxi to the Woods Hole ferry which lands about 150 yards from the Airplane House. It'll take maybe two hours to get from the Vineyard airport to Woods Hole, but you'll arrive relaxed. Falmouth Airport -- Private planes only. There is no scheduled service into Falmouth, but it is only eight miles from Woods Hole. If you fly, or if you have a friend with an airplane, it's the place to land. When you get there, call a taxi. (No, Nathan, the runway's too short for your Gulfstream.) Bus fares & schedules from Boston. Bus fares & schedules from New York City & Providence. Just before you come into
Woods Hole, you
will see the Sands of Time and the
Nautilus Motor Inns on your right. You will be staying in
one of these motels -- rooms will be pre-assigned. (You may wish
to check in before you find the Airplane House.) We encourage you to walk
from your motel to the Airplane House. You can drive, but the
road is bad, there is limited parking out on the point, parking space
is a BIG local political issue, and it is a pretty walk (except behind
the Coast Guard Base). It is less than 1/2 mile. Date page last modified: October 16, 2001 |
