Quote of Note: John Greenly
"When we started our Wi-Fi project, the incumbent sent in a truck and started laying fiber. They said it was just a coincidence."
John Greenly, Wireless Services Manager, Lompoc Connect, City of Lompoc, CA at Esme Vos' Muniwireless meeting.
"Same thing in Hermosa Beach."
Michael Keegan, City Council Member, Hermosa Beach, CA.
Ah, competition.

Yeahbut we have far more than enough fiber here in St. Lawrence County. In fact we have so much fiber that the local quasi-governmental assistance agency (DANC.org) insisted on stringing more fiber. Of course, they picked off all the major non-profit customers which makes it harder for anyone else to stay in business, but no matter.
You see, the real problem with worshipping fiber is that nobody sells fiber. They sell bitstreams, and it doesn't really matter to the customer how they provision that bitstream. DANC was going to sell dark fiber with the theory that they were then not competing with existing providers (Verizon and Time-Warner). Ha! That plan got hung up against the reality that most customers don't WANT dark fiber because they have no clue what to do with it. They want a bitstream.
