Telcos: "Trust us"

The telcos say, "Trust us. There's nothing wrong with the Internet. We don't need Network Neutrality laws to ensure that we don't block, impede, or degrade content, applications, or services, because you can trust us."

Then the telcos (except for Qwest) turn over our private telephone call data to the NSA. Without a law, a warrant or a court order. Trust us indeed.

Ah, did you forget that we're engaged in a war on terror. It's believed that there are terrorist cells and sympathizers within U.S. borders. Collecting phone numbers and contact other phone numbers isn't a problem. Are you calling terrorists? Then what's the problem? Calls aren't being listened to, the government doesn't know what you're talking about.

How many lives could have been saved had the NSA, in cooperation with phone companies, been tracking the calling habits of the 9/11 hijackers?

We're at war, sir. I'm willing to allow the U.S. government to look at who I'm calling because I have nothing to hide.

However, I'm sure you'll blame the Bush Administration for not doing enough should we be attacked again. Completely forgetting that you denounced efforts to do just that.

yeah well interesting comment but maybe we should think about the potential other abuses that governments or other entities can inflict when listening in to conversations. Hitler also used the argument 'inventorize everything, it won't hurt you, since you have nothing to hide, have you ?' to be able to export the jews, gays and gipsies in record tempo to the oven... to have them processed and collect their golden teeth...

same goes for the communists in america the past 40 years. creating a society whereby it is believe to be good to have governments look into everything "because they have too" is stupid.

on the other hand it is the price that the USA is paying for it's mingling into all the things in the world.

Freedom of communication. Freedom of Investigation.

But I do think that the war against terror is being used a bit too much as an argument to justify yet another big brotherism of the government.

May I also state that the US is not only looking into their own records but also in records of other countries.

Adding to that. How would you feel if muslim governments need to have a look into your phone-records to see if you are not a terrorist ?

Look at things from the different perspectives USA-freaks. Producte a bit less weapons, don't stick your nose into everything. you already run the internet, you got skype, ebay... not satisfied already ?

Eat less hamburgers, conduct less wars and invest more in development. Not only your own development...

I stopped reading after "Ah, did you forget that we're engaged in a war on terror".

You must be mentally less competent to make such a statement. There is no such thing as "war on terror", it's even an oxymoron. It is used for numb headed people for CNN sound bites while they throw down the pop corn, and crack another can of soda.

If you care to think that there is even such a thing, please provide a description of it. I really appreciate my American friends (I'm British), but statements like this are embarrassing. There are good things and bad things about each culture but it seems that world affairs and political analysis has been off the American education card for sometime.
