Bell Labs Holmdel Building to be torn down
I held several jobs in my 12+ year career at AT&T Bell Labs, but I spent the most time based in the Holmdel building. It was designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, a fact I only learned when I visited Helsinki. Its internal catwalks, which faced an internal courtyard, reminded those of us who worked there of a space station. It was easy to imagine that we all wore Star-Trek type color-coded jumpsuits as we hiked from quadrant to quadrant. Now the building is being torn down to make way for . . . some other kind of development. Dave Farber published this rather cursory NYT article. If only buildings could tell stories!
