Chairman Martin's Big Moment: DSL Prime

David Burstein, writing in DSL Prime, makes this incisive comment:
Will Kevin Martin look Ed Whitacre in the eyes and say, "You want your merger, this is what you have to do for the American people?" Martin faces probably the biggest decision of his career with the AT&T/BellSouth merger . . . Whitacre will agree if Martin is strong.

In this unique historical moment U.S. telcos have everything they've asked for. The holy market holds sway. If nothing happens, Network Neutrality's history. Now's their chance to prove their deregulatory theory, to make the U.S. the most wired country in the world and to make themselves grow financially again.

In what way it this a free, deregulated market? 50 PUCs, FCC with finger marks all over the place. "Managed capitalism" -- just please none of that nasty creative destruction stuff.
