2007: The Year of the Open Cell Phone?

Will 2007 be the year of the Open Cell Phone? We are moving in that direction (see my post on OpenMoko) but we will need a dramatic new product introduction by Apple, or some company not tied to the cellcos, for it to happen this year.

(To me, an Open Cell Phone means simply that the applications are not provided or gate-kept by the connection provider.)

We'll know we're there if there's as much buzz around mobile apps next December as there is around video now. If I were offered a bet on this, I'd probably keep my money in my pocket.

Don't the P800 and E61 already meet these criteria?

Yes, Wes, but will the buzz arrive before next December?

Anyone who has read "Rise of the Stupid Network" understands that open cellphones will blow the doors off the mobile telephony industry. The thing is, IMHO, open source is to software what stupid-networks are to data communications ... and openmoko is comprised of both of these disruptive technologies.
