John Doerr on Climate Change

John Doerr spoke at TED2007 on climate change. It's more free enterprise-oriented than Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth, more entrepreneurial than the most recent IPCC report [official summary.pdf] , and as powerful and personal as anything I've seen. Watch it.

I've been spending a lot of time on this over the last 18 months. I'm not very optimistic about purely corporate approaches as I'm not optimistic about governmental approaches. When I talk off the record with biologists and climatologist friends I have the impression that we need enormous changes in the next 15 years. I doubt it will happen.

At a closed door conference I was at last month the consensus is the thing that will save us is a global depression in the next 5 years ... a deep one. So perhaps W is doing his best to help the planet:=)

The figures he is quoting are truly scary, especially the comparisons with China.

But he says "We may have the political will to do this..." I'm sorry, but where is any evidence of this? Who is going to be the first to turn the thermostat up this summer or down this winter? Who is going to be the first to scrap their SUV?

What I got from it is that we are talking about some dramatic lifestyle changes, and I don't see anybody in the comfort-obsessed USA doing anything about it. Until it's far too late.
