Comcast throws money at ISOC

Comcast has become a platinum sponsor of the Internet Society, and it is hosting the next IETF meeting in Philadelphia, March 9-14. [link]

Lots of questions:

Why was this development ignored at Monday's FCC meeting? (Did you hear it mentioned? I didn't, but then I was not listening as closely as I could've.)

Does Comcast suddenly get what the IETF does?

Does Comcast think it is buying influence?

Wonder who will pay the seat warmers at this meeting?

Gee I am not the only one who thought this was hilarious. Did it not occur to Lynne St Amour that the timing of this announcement was, er, somehow unfortunate? Or is this just further proof that ISOC does not get policy? So if networks are not implementing true IETF TCP/IP, they can still be a platinum member of ISOC? Is there any point at which the implementation of TCP/IP is so bastardized and anti competitive that ISOC will refuse a membership? Kind of a scary thought when you realize that ISOC holds all of the intellectual property / copyrights to the Internet.
